Truly a stunning, rare and dramatic Mexican sterling silver necklace. The thick chunky tabs are strewn on a sterling chain, insuring the wear-ability and fluid movement of this heavy necklace. The tabs are 7/8" x 1 1/8", and one half inch thick on the sides. The centers are gracefully curved, creating a trough-like design.
Not for the faint of heart, the weight is close to 10 ounces (in excess of 276 grams.)
Marks: 1943-48 Hector Aguilar hallmark, as shown on page 254 of "William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance" by Morrill.
Please Note: Due to the tabs being hollow, a raise applied cartouche hallmark was used. The thin wall prevents the "normal" punched application of the hallmark.
Please see photo #3, which shows the opening for the clasp and allows a peek inside to view the wall.
This was purchased by us a few years ago at Delpasado Antiques at The Showplace in NYC, as a very special souvenir of a trip to New York. It is actually too large for me to wear comfortably, so I am reluctantly offering it for sale.
