This is a very heavy and strong pin magnet. I imagine it was a sewing aid (perhaps industrial grade) to assist in clearing the work space of stray pins and needles. Or perhaps it was for hair dressing - we have several pin magnets which were devised for removing hairpins from up-dos. This would also work nicely cleaning up nails and screws.
