William Shakespeare Hand Painted Dish Signed by Artist

Price: $125.00

You are looking at a beautiful hand painted and glazed terracotta plate, with a special provenance.

The oval dish / plate measures 12" by 9".  It is beautifully painted in a folk art style, with a wonderful naive portrait of William Shakespeare.

The words: non sanz droict  ("not without right") appear at the top of the dish.
That was the  motto of the Shakespeare Family coat of arms.

There are probably more hidden references and significant imagery hidden within the illustration.
It is truly a one of a kind item, and a chance to own something special once owned by the foremost authority on William Shakespeare.

This is from the collection of Louis Marder (1915-2009), a premier William Shakespeare expert and collector. Mr. Marder was a professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. In 1951, he started The Shakespeare Newsletter, a publication which now has over 2,000 subscribers in 37 countries around the world.

The back of the dish bears this inscription:

Pintor: Jose Felician
Pia 5 Marzo  1987
Por Louis Marder
