Antique Chinese Shagreen Eyeglass Case
Dating back to 8th century Japan, shagreen is known as one of the most exotic and luxurious of decorative materials. It is made from Sharkskin and also the skin of Ray fish. (also known as Sharkskin or Galuchat). It's popularity was also due to the resilient nature of the beautiful, yet tough skin.
Eye-wear was a popular accessory fad of upper class Chinese in the 19th century. Of course one would need a fine case in which to carry the spectacles. This case is particularly nice due to the addition of purple silk cord, a carved carnelian bead, an amber bead and the carved stone.
The skin is in nice condition. The interior is lined with wood.
Carrying cord is in good condition.
A very nice piece for display or for use.
